Although frequently absent from the historical record, women who experienced Michigan's early days disputed the prevailing notion that "a woman's place is in the home." Well before the modern feminist movement, these women crusaded for women's rights, contributed to the literary record, championed women's education, or orchestrated efforts to improve society's less fortunate.
